Do you know what is excellent? Crunchy, buttery, and delicious? Loved by (almost) everyone? Garlic bread, clearly.

There is nothing like home made garlic bread. The kind you generally find in take-away places, accompanying pizza, is nothing but a pallid imitation. Limp, greasy, lukewarm, profoundly unappealing. Even at quite good restaurants, the garlic bread can be a disappointment.

Made yourself, garlic bread is amazing, and will never fail to please. It takes only minutes to construct, and another few minutes to cook. Perfect to accompany a lunch or a dinner, and beautifully transportable, making it a useful contribution to a pot-luck dinner or a picnic. For garlic and herb bread, add fresh herbs of your choice (oregano, thyme etc.) to the garlic butter.

Garlic Bread (serves 3)

One short loaf of French Bread/a crusty baguette

50g butter

5 cloves fresh garlic

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius. Warm the butter until it is of a spreadable texture, then crush the garlic and mix it with the butter. Beat until mixed. Cut the bread stick into slices about 1.5-2cm thick, but do not completely sever – keep the slices joined together at the bottom. Spread the garlic butter onto each slice of bread, then wrap the whole loaf in tinfoil. bake in the oven for about 5-10 minutes, until golden and crispy.
